Economic Security for All

Despite record low unemployment and rising wages, families and seniors are struggling with the cost of living. That’s why Marilyn has focused on building an economy that works for all of us.

Lowering Costs for Families & Small Businesses

Marilyn voted to cap the cost of insulin at $35 per month, and to build more safe and affordable housing. To help lower prices at the gas pump, she cosponsored legislation to prevent Big Oil from ripping off consumers. To make sure seniors receive their hard-earned benefits, she’s protecting Social Security and Medicare.

Marilyn knows that too often small businesses can get left behind. That’s why she’s pushing for more small and minority-owned businesses to contract with the government, and expanding access energy efficiency grants to help save on operational costs. She’s also pushing to help give more loan forgiveness and flexibility.

Getting Our Economy Back on Track

Marilyn delivers direct support for South Sound families and small businesses when they need it most. She’s helped cut taxes for working families and small businesses. Since taking office, she’s also helped recover more than $10.2 million in federal benefits back to South Sound residents.

Creating Jobs and Career Paths

Marilyn is helping to bring good-paying jobs to Washington State through bipartisan infrastructure plans. She voted to expand access to financial aid and tuition-free college for students in high-demand fields such as nursing, behavioral health, teaching, and the building trades. She will continue to push more vocational-technical training and apprenticeship programs.

Standing Up for Our Values

From protecting reproductive freedom to combating climate change, Marilyn has been a steady voice for commonsense Washington State values in the United States Congress.

Reproductive Freedom

Marilyn knows that reproductive health care is a private medical decision between a patient and a provider. She is fighting to ensure that safe and legal abortion and family planning care are available to everyone. She has supported funding for Planned Parenthood and called on the federal government to require insurance companies to cover a 12-month supply of birth control. She’s also working to ensure that our service members receive the safe and legal reproductive health care they deserve.

Protecting our Environment and Health

Marilyn knows that the climate crisis is one of the most serious threats facing the South Sound, Washington State, our country, and our planet. That’s why she’s fought for steps like boosting renewable energy and has opposed plans to expand offshore drilling. She passed legislation to make the Puget Sound a federal priority, helped re-launch the Puget Sound Recovery Caucus, and secured historic funding increases for restoring the Puget Sound.

Supporting Our Servicemembers, Military Families, and Veterans

A proud Army brat, Marilyn works hard on behalf of the tens of thousands of servicemembers, veterans, and military families who call the South Sound home. She has led bipartisan legislation to help military families facing food insecurity, and to make sure military families have access to affordable housing. She has also called on the VA to improve our nation’s health care systems for veterans, and secured provisions to evaluate pay and improve the housing supply in the annual defense bill.

Making Our Communities Safe from Gun Violence

Marilyn knows it should be harder for felons, domestic abusers, and terrorists to buy dangerous weapons. In Congress, she is standing up for responsible solutions like universal background checks for gun purchases and restoring the ban on assault-style weapons and high capacity magazines. As a cosponsor of the bipartisan Bipartisan Background Checks Act, and the Equal Access to Justice for Victims of Gun Violence Act, she is working across the aisle to protect our families, and prevent gun violence.

Supporting Law Enforcement & Public Safety

Marilyn knows people should feel safe in their homes and communities, while acknowledging that our system disproportionately affects people of color, and low-income communities. She’s voted to increase funding for police forces and training in the South Sound and throughout the country, and helped secure federal funds for local law enforcement to invest more in community-based policing.

Delivering for the South Sound

As the former Mayor of Tacoma and now the South Sound’s voice in Congress, Marilyn knows how to get things done and deliver for her community. She’s worked across the aisle – with Democrats and Republicans – to get results.

Bipartisan Infrastructure Law

Marilyn helped advance the bipartisan infrastructure law and secured $7 billion of federal investment to improve roads, repair bridges and sidewalks, improve broadband access, invest in public transit, and provide clean water in Washington State.

Direct Services for the South Sound

Along with returning millions of dollars in owed benefits to South Sound residents, Marilyn and her team have directly assisted over 1,700 people in the South Sound with issues like Social Security benefits and passports. Marilyn and her team have held over 500 meetings with constituents and stakeholders to listen to the community.

Bringing Federal Investments to Washington State

Marilyn has secured over $45 million in investments directly for the South Sound – like funding for clean water in Lakewood and Thurston County, road safety projects in Lacey, and support for Tribal Nations. She also delivered $7 billion in bipartisan infrastructure investments for Washington State, and over $300 million for the South Sound through the American Rescue Plan.
